A stark reminder of the escalating crisis in Gaza was underscored by the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who confirmed that the Kamal Adwan hospital in North Gaza has been shut down.
The hospital’s closure followed a raid on December 27, during which its patients and staff were forcibly evacuated, and the hospital’s director was detained. The humanitarian consequences have been devastating. Ten patients were transferred to the Indonesian Hospital, which has also since ceased operations due to critical shortages of water, electricity, and sanitation. Of these patients, four were arrested at a checkpoint by Israeli forces, leaving the remaining seven, along with 15 caregivers and health workers, stranded in intolerable conditions.

Barriers to Humanitarian Aid
Efforts to deliver aid to affected areas have been met with persistent roadblocks. According to UN Associate Spokesperson Florencia Soto Niño-Martinez, over 150 attempts to access North Gaza since October have been rejected by Israeli authorities.
Even when missions receive prior approval, significant delays impede progress. Between December 27 and 29, only one out of four planned aid missions to the area successfully delivered essential supplies, including food, water, and medical aid, to survivors evacuated from Kamal Adwan Hospital.
Despite these challenges, the plight of those in need remains alarming. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) emphasized that delivering aid to survivors should not necessitate breaking a siege. “Aid workers must be granted safe and unhindered access to assist people wherever they are,” a spokesperson stated.

Looting and Supply Shortages
The humanitarian crisis has been further worsened by armed looting. Within three days, two major incidents in southern Gaza targeted truckloads of supplies meant for those in need. These attacks have drained already scarce resources and exposed aid workers to significant danger.
At the same time, ongoing Israeli restrictions on both commercial and humanitarian imports have crippled relief efforts. Families across Gaza urgently require food, shelter, and clothing as they face worsening winter conditions without adequate support.

A Call for Immediate International Action
The United Nations has urged all parties involved in the conflict to uphold humanitarian principles to ensure the protection of civilians and the safe delivery of aid.
As the crisis deteriorates, swift international intervention is critical. Millions of people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank are in dire need of sustained, life-saving support.
For those caught in the crossfire, the stakes are unimaginably high, and the urgency to act has never been greater.
