The coalition, commonly referred to as the Ramstein format—named after the air base where its meetings are traditionally held—has not convened for a full meeting since Donald Trump’s election victory in November.
This loose alliance, overseen by the U.S. Department of Defense since the onset of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, has been pivotal in coordinating Western military assistance. Its efforts have encompassed a wide range of initiatives, including air defense systems, drone technology, and cybersecurity support.
Uncertainty looms over the future of the initiative under Trump’s leadership. The former president has repeatedly expressed his intention to bring the war to a swift conclusion if he assumes office. In related news, earlier this week, President Joe Biden unveiled a new $2.5 billion military aid package for Ukraine, aiming to bolster Kyiv’s defenses amidst the ongoing conflict.
