Stockholm – Sweden is set to fully integrate into the EU’s prosecutorial cooperation system at the beginning of the new year.
Martin Bresman, who leads the National Unit Against Corruption at the Prosecutor’s Office, will become the first Swedish prosecutor based at the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) headquarters in Luxembourg. Concurrently, the EPPO will commence operations in Stockholm with two European prosecutors being stationed there.
The EPPO’s mission is to investigate and prosecute offenses that threaten the financial interests of the EU, including fraud, money laundering, corruption, and bribery.
While the EPPO was established in 2021, Sweden initially opted to remain outside of its framework.
Swedish Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer commented on the decision, stating that Sweden’s membership in the EPPO enhances opportunities for effective collaboration in fighting crime, recovering illicit funds, and protecting taxpayer money.
