A new bridge is being constructed over the Osum River in Berat, an ancient city in Albania that boasts a history of 2,500 years. Located 100 kilometers southeast of Tirana, the project is backed by the European Union. Once completed, the bridge will improve access for local residents and significantly alleviate traffic congestion on the current Goricë bridge.
Berat’s mayor, Ervin Demo, reported that efforts are also underway to enhance river protection and expand the pedestrian zone in the Goricë area.
According to Mayor Demo, the new panoramic route will make it easier for tourists to reach the Goricë neighborhood. Visitors will be able to enjoy strolls along the newly established pedestrian path by the Osum River while also ensuring safer vehicle circulation.
Investments in infrastructure are aimed at bolstering tourism in Berat, which is renowned for its distinctive architecture, often referred to as the “city of one over one windows.” In recent years, it has evolved into a popular year-round tourist destination.
In an interview with ATSH, Mayor Demo highlighted that Berat is now accessible to visitors in every season. “We have experienced an unusual tourism season that kicked off in January and continues to thrive. This is what we refer to as year-round tourism,” he explained.
“By September, we recorded 800,000 visitors, with approximately 85% being international tourists,” Demo emphasized. (December 27)
