Istanbul (Turkey) – On Thursday, 50 tons of medical supplies arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, courtesy of the European Union. These supplies are set to reach Syria by December 31, following the completion of customs procedures in Turkey, as announced by a WHO spokeswoman to AFP on Friday.
In mid-December, the EU revealed its plan to initiate a humanitarian airlift to Syria via Turkey, marking the first European aid of this nature since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad.
The aid package includes emergency surgery kits for trauma and vital medicines, according to Mrinalini Santhanam, a WHO press relations officer based in Gaziantep, southern Turkey.
Lorenzo Dal Monte, a planning analyst at WHO, stated, “The supplies will be distributed to health facilities and medical professionals in Syria based on humanitarian principles, ensuring that all regions, especially Idlib and Aleppo, receive assistance.” He added that this equipment will facilitate “thousands of surgical procedures and the treatment of the injured.” (December 27, 2024)
