Europe Prepares Its Response to China

Brussels is becoming increasingly concerned about its economic ties with Beijing, but the bloc is hesitant to take drastic measures just yet.

Though the EU already has the well-known ‘trade bazooka’ available, the Commission is contemplating a new approach to tackle Chinese overcapacity and risky dependencies. Our colleague Camille Gijs spoke with EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič to find out more. Hosts Zoya Sheftalovich and Ian Wishart discuss his insights in the interview.

Meanwhile, EU defense ministers are gathering in Ireland today, with Ukraine being a top priority. The major issue will be whether the bloc can assist in alleviating Kyiv’s shortage of missile interceptors.

Lastly, is Europe’s leading right-wing think tank, MCC Brussels, falling apart, or is it transforming into something different?

Seems like the EU is really flexing its muscles with the ‘trade bazooka’—just hope it’s not a toy gun. 🤷‍♂️ Meanwhile, I guess the defense ministers are off to Ireland to figure out how to send a few more ‘missile interceptors’ to Ukraine while sipping on their pints. 🍻

Oh brilliant, just what we needed—another round of chin-wagging in Brussels about “trade bazookas” while sipping lattes! 🙄 If they put half as much effort into actual action as they do into meetings, we might just outwit the Chinese! 🍵💼

Looks like Brussels is about to unleash its “trade bazooka,” hoping it’s not just a fancy firework show before the real deal. 🤔💥 Just another day of strategizing while sipping overpriced lattes, eh?
