The newly established LUMI AIF supercomputer will be housed at CSC – IT Center for Science’s data center in Kajaani, Finland. It is supported by the LUMI AI Factory consortium, which includes Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland. The LUMI-AI supercomputer is designed for advanced AI workflows, dealing with large and dynamic datasets, and providing the necessary computational power for extensive simulations and data-heavy scientific applications. Built using next-generation AMD Instinct™ MI430X GPUs and 6th Gen AMD EPYC™ 256-core processors, the system promises a tenfold increase in AI capacity compared to the current LUMI supercomputer, enhancing Europe’s capabilities in AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and data-driven research.
Since April 2025, the LUMI AI Factory has been offering AI computing resources to European SMEs and startups, utilizing the LUMI supercomputer in key sectors such as manufacturing, health and life sciences, and communication technologies. It also supports climate research, materials science, and language technology communities. The LUMI AI Factory leverages LUMI’s track record in high-impact AI applications, aiding in the development and implementation of advanced AI solutions.
With the signing of the new contract, the initiative progresses to its next phase, with LUMI-AI’s deployment set to notably enhance AI and HPC capacities across Europe. Anders Jensen, Executive Director of EuroHPC JU, has highlighted the significance of LUMI-AI in forming a robust European AI infrastructure ecosystem. Kimmo Koski, Managing Director of CSC – IT Center for Science, commended the collaboration with EuroHPC JU and the consortium in creating this superior infrastructure for researchers in Europe.
Following a tender call in May 2025, BULL was chosen, while Finland was selected as the hosting site in December 2024. The supercomputer, aimed primarily at supporting startups and SMEs, will also be accessible to the broader research community. EuroHPC JU and the LUMI AIF consortium will jointly allocate resources based on their investments. The system, anticipated to be operational by 2027, is co-funded with a total budget of EUR 387.8 million, equally split between EuroHPC JU, whose funding comes from the Digital Europe Programme, and the LUMI AIF consortium.
Additionally, the LUMI AI Factory will feature a new quantum computer, LUMI-IQ, which will facilitate an experimental platform integrating HPC and AI with emerging quantum technologies. LUMI AI Factory is part of a wider network of AI Factories across Europe, with EuroHPC JU currently managing the implementation of 19 AI factories and 13 AI Factory Antennas, broadening the initiative.
As of July 2026, EuroHPC JU launched a tender call to select consortia for future AI Gigafactories in the EU.
EuroHPC JU, a legal and funding entity, aims to make Europe a leader in supercomputing by pooling resources. It has procured 12 supercomputers across Europe, including systems like JUPITER and Alice Recoque, Europe’s first exascale systems. EuroHPC JU provides supercomputing access to European users for scientific and industrial advancement through its Access Calls, while also developing a European Quantum Computing infrastructure. This infrastructure offers free access to some quantum computers, allowing users to experiment and innovate. EuroHPC JU also funds research projects to develop a comprehensive European supercomputing supply chain. Its mandate was recently expanded to include deploying AI Gigafactories and advancing quantum technologies.
