André Remy Dies at 89 After Celebrated Belgian TV Career

Brussels, Belgium, 30 August (Eurotoday) – André Remy dies aged 89, bringing to an end a long career that made him a familiar figure in Belgian television, football broadcasting and political satire. RTBF announced his death on Sunday, identifying him as a former presenter and former sports director at Canal+ Belgium.

Remy became widely known through Feu vert, the youth television programme he presented alongside Jacques Careuil. His career later expanded into sports journalism and management before political comedy became another defining part of his public life.

Confirming the news, RTBF said:

“André Remy est décédé à 89 ans.”

The broadcaster highlighted Feu vert and the political satire Sois Belge et tais-toi ! when paying tribute to his career.

Why André Remy became important to Belgian television

Remy’s reputation came from his ability to move between very different areas of broadcasting. He worked as a presenter and journalist before becoming closely involved with football coverage as sports director at Canal+ Belgium.

His later work demonstrated a different side of his career. Remy helped develop Sois Belge et tais-toi !, a satirical production that turned Belgian politics and public figures into sketches, impersonations and songs.

Performing remained important to him well into his later years. Speaking about his work during a 2009 appearance, Remy said:

“Ce n’est pas de la fatigue, c’est du bonheur.”

The remark — “It isn’t tiredness, it’s happiness” — reflected his enthusiasm for continuing to perform rather than withdrawing from public life.

What will Belgian broadcasting lose after his death?

The announcement that André Remy dies removes a figure whose career connected several generations of Belgian audiences.

His legacy extends beyond appearing on television. His leadership in sports broadcasting placed him behind the development of football coverage, while his political satire provided audiences with a humorous interpretation of Belgian public life.

For former colleagues and viewers, his death also represents the loss of a broadcaster from an era when presenters often worked across journalism, entertainment and live television rather than specialising in one format.

What happens to André Remy’s legacy now?

Remy’s programmes, performances and contribution to Belgian broadcasting remain the clearest record of his career. Feu vert established his early television profile, while football broadcasting and Sois Belge et tais-toi ! defined later periods of his professional life.
