Tadej Pogacar Needs Surgery After Vuelta Crash

Xeraco, Spain, 30 August (Eurotoday Newspaper) – Tadej Pogacar requires surgery after a serious crash forced him out of the Vuelta a España while leading the race. The Pogacar Vuelta crash left the Slovenian with a displaced left collarbone fracture, concussion, a stable C7 cervical fracture and multiple abrasions.

The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider crashed during Saturday’s 171km stage eight from Pucol to Xeraco. He was unable to continue and was taken to hospital for examinations, bringing his attempt to win the Vuelta for the first time to an abrupt end.

Pogacar had held a three-minute, 50-second advantage over Spain’s Enric Mas in the general classification before the accident.

Why did Pogacar crash and why does he need surgery?

The accident happened with just over 30 kilometres of the stage remaining. Television footage showed Pogacar swerving before losing control and falling heavily. No official finding has established that another rider caused the crash.

Medical examinations subsequently identified several injuries. UAE Team Emirates-XRG medical director Dr Adrian Rotunno said Pogacar suffered a concussion, displaced left clavicle fracture, stable C7 cervical fracture and abrasions.

Rotunno provided an important update on the seriousness of the injuries, saying: “Fortunately, no other major injuries and no neurological fallout.”

The collarbone fracture requires surgery, although the operation is being managed around concussion precautions. The Pogacar Vuelta crash therefore ends his participation regardless of how quickly the procedure can be completed.

What will Pogacar face during his recovery?

Pogacar’s immediate challenge is recovering from the concussion and undergoing treatment for his fractured collarbone. His stable cervical fracture will also require medical monitoring.

UAE Team Emirates-XRG has not confirmed when the 27-year-old will return to competitive cycling. Any timetable will depend on his recovery and further medical assessments, making it too early to determine how much of his remaining 2026 programme could be affected.

The accident is particularly significant because Pogacar was attempting to complete a career sweep of cycling’s three Grand Tours after victories at the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia.

How will Pogacar’s absence change the Vuelta?

Pogacar’s withdrawal dramatically changes the battle for the red jersey. Enric Mas moved into the overall lead following the Slovenian’s departure but declined to wear the leader’s jersey during the post-stage presentation.

Explaining the gesture, Mas said: “Tadej crashed, I didn’t win the red jersey.”

The Pogacar Vuelta crash removes the race’s commanding leader and gives his rivals an unexpected opportunity to fight for overall victory.

For Pogacar, attention now shifts

Just what the Vuelta needed, eh? A little drama to spice things up; who knew a collarbone could be so trendy? 🤷‍♂️

Quite the show, eh? Just when you thought cycling was a leisurely Sunday ride, Tadej decides to turn it into a game of “how many bones can one man break?” 🏍️💥 Hope his collarbone has a better recovery plan than my last business trip!

Typical Pogacar, always crashing the party when he should be sipping espresso and basking in the glory of victory. Surgery after a bike ride? Sounds like someone needs to take a refresher course on how to stay upright! 🍵🚴‍♂️

Seems like Tadej took the term “collarbone” a bit too literally—who knew it required surgery to stay in the cycling game? 🤷‍♂️ Bet he thought crashing was just part of the fun! 🚴‍♂️💨

Seems like Pogacar’s just taken “breaking away from the pack” a bit too literally this time! 🥴 Hope the surgery goes smoother than his last corner.
