Germany plans a €12B missile program to deter Putin

An internal document allocates nearly €9 billion for weapons development and procurement, along with €182 million for maintenance. Additionally, it includes €1.8 billion for cruise missile development and procurement, plus €97 million for upkeep. These sums total around €11 billion, while ministry notes indicate an overall funding requirement of “almost €12 billion.”

This missile initiative signifies a significant shift for Germany. Rather than waiting for a singular new European missile, Berlin aims for multiple weapon types: cost-effective missiles for mass production, American Tomahawks for quicker availability, and more advanced European weapons in the future.

This expansion occurs as German military chiefs warn of a potential Russian attack on NATO territory by the decade’s end. Berlin aims to ensure that if deterrence fails, Russian military facilities will not be spared merely due to their distance from the front lines.
