Romanian Jet Intercepts Drone Near Offshore Gas Platform, President Points to Moscow

The Romanian official condemned Russia’s actions in a post on X, while European Commission President Von der Leyen expressed European support for Romania, noting an escalating threat campaign targeting the EU. She highlighted initiatives to bolster defense production in Europe to address new threats effectively.

Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruță stated on Facebook that Romania’s Coast Guard observed a drone near the Neptun Deep platform, leading to defensive actions involving two F-16s. He confirmed the drone was not Ukrainian via a communication channel with Ukraine.

Neptun Deep is Romania’s major natural gas project in the Black Sea, anticipated to start production in 2027 and become a significant EU gas source. NATO allies have voiced concerns about protection from Russian drone threats. Von der Leyen described the incident as “hybrid warfare.” The Russian embassy in Romania did not offer an immediate comment.

Just when you thought Romania was only good for Dracula and pretty landscapes, they’ve gone and turned into a drone-swatting superhero. 🇷🇴🦸‍♂️ Hope they’ve got better luck at gas production than intercepting pesky flying gadgets! 😂

Just another day in Europe, where dodging drones is the new Olympic sport. 🏅 If only our defense budgets were as robust as our ability to play diplomatic hopscotch!

Just what we needed, right? A drone show near our gas platforms—talk about bringing the party to the Black Sea! 🕺💼

  10. You know it’s a good day when Romanian jets have to play tag with drones instead of just sipping espresso by the seaside. Next thing you know, we’ll be handing out medals for “Most Creative Use of Airspace.” 😂✈️
