Birmingham, 16 August (Eurotoday) A man has been arrested on suspicion of fraud after a Birmingham stadium security operation disrupted the European Athletics Championships at Alexander Stadium, leaving athletes and spectators facing delays and forcing six medal ceremonies to be postponed.
West Midlands Police said concerns were raised at about 8.15pm on Saturday after a man in his 30s was found in an area of the stadium with incorrect accreditation.
Officers responded by introducing precautionary security measures while they established what had happened. Police later said there was no immediate risk to the public.
The man was arrested on suspicion of fraud and remained in custody for questioning on Sunday.
Transport stopped as police investigate accreditation concern
The security response came during the penultimate evening of competition, when Alexander Stadium was hosting thousands of spectators and some of the championships’ most prominent events.
Transport serving athletes and accredited personnel was temporarily suspended while security procedures were carried out. The interruption also affected spectators leaving the stadium, with queues building for shuttle buses after the evening’s competition.
Among those caught in the disruption were British athletes following a memorable night on the track. Great Britain’s men’s and women’s 4×100 metres relay teams both won gold, but members of the squads were subsequently delayed at the venue.
The interruption also forced organisers to postpone six medal ceremonies that had been scheduled between 10pm and 11pm.
Transport services were later restored.
West Midlands Police confirms fraud arrest
West Midlands Police linked the operation to concerns about accreditation rather than an identified threat to spectators.
The force said: “A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of fraud and remains in custody for questioning.”
Police described the restrictions as precautionary and acknowledged the disruption caused to people attending and working at the championships.
Crucially, officers said there was no immediate risk to the public.
The investigation remains ongoing. An arrest on suspicion of an offence does not establish guilt, and no charge had been announced at the time of reporting.
Birmingham 2026 puts safety ahead of schedule
Championship organisers defended the decision to suspend transport while the situation was assessed, saying the welfare of those inside the venue had to come first.
Birmingham 2026 said: “The safety and wellbeing of our spectators, athletes, workforce and the wider Championships family will always be our first priority.”
Organisers thanked athletes, spectators and staff for their patience during the disruption and subsequently confirmed that transport had returned to normal.
