Russia Claims Capture of 19 Settlements in Southeast Ukraine

Southeastern Ukraine, 15 August (Eurotoday Newspaper) Russia says its troops have captured 19 settlements across southeastern Ukraine during its Ukraine summer offensive, reporting gains in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions as fighting continues along a contested section of the frontline.

The Russian Defence Ministry announced the figure on Saturday, citing a report from Pyotr Bolgarev, commander of Russia’s eastern group of forces. Moscow did not name the 19 settlements it says have come under Russian control. Reuters said it could not independently verify the battlefield claims.

Russia reports gains in two Ukrainian regions

The latest Russian account focuses on Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia, where both sides have reported military operations during the summer.

According to the Defence Ministry, the 19 settlements were taken during Russia’s summer campaign. The ministry provided no individual dates for their capture and did not publish a complete list of the locations.

In a separate development, Russian forces recently took control of Rybalskoye in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to the Defence Ministry in a report carried by the Interfax news agency.

The claims should be treated as battlefield assertions from Moscow rather than independently confirmed changes in territorial control.

Russian commander gives account of summer campaign

The Russian ministry based Saturday’s announcement on Bolgarev’s assessment of operations conducted by the eastern group of forces.

No direct public quote from Bolgarev was included in the Reuters report. The ministry instead attributed the figure of 19 captured settlements to his report.

Russia’s announcement comes as its overall rate of frontline advances has slowed during 2026. At the same time, Moscow has intensified ballistic missile attacks against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, according to Reuters.

Ukraine reports its own territorial advances

Kyiv has also claimed gains during fighting in the southeast, presenting a different picture of developments along the front.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces had recaptured 745 square kilometres — about 288 square miles — of Russian-held territory during 2026.

Zelenskyy’s figure covered operations across the southeastern front. Like Russia’s latest claims, rapidly changing battlefield reports can be difficult to verify independently while fighting remains active.

The competing accounts show that the Ukraine summer offensive remains fluid, with both Moscow and Kyiv seeking to demonstrate progress.
