NATO Aircraft Down Drone Over Latvia

Latvia’s military has cautioned that similar incidents could reoccur. “With the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine, we may see more cases where foreign unmanned aircraft enter or approach Latvian airspace,” it stated.

An air raid alert was announced in four eastern Latvian municipalities at approximately 4 a.m. local time. The military urged residents to remain indoors and stay away from exterior walls.

Following the drone’s downing, Sandra Kapteine, head of the Rugāji village administration, informed the Latvian Information Agency that the incident “caused no casualties,” as the drone’s wreckage landed in a “wooded area.”

Similar incidents have increased in nearby countries over recent months. A week ago, Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov reported that a Ukrainian-made drone traversed Bulgarian airspace from Romania and exploded near the village of Kardam.
