Spain Dismisses Trump’s Claim of Capitulation on Defense Spending

“I had issues with Spain, but they’ve resolved them today. Spain was very generous, as I told them I’d stop trading,” Trump said aboard Air Force One, noting that Spain honored a payment request.

Trump’s remarks caused confusion in Madrid.

After the comments surfaced Thursday, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares told RTVE he was unsure what Trump referred to, stating, “Only he can explain.”

Spanish officials assumed Trump meant the country’s efforts to fulfill military expenditure commitments. A government spokesperson told POLITICO, “No additional expenditures; we believe he referred to meeting the 2 percent target.”

The official noted Spain has tripled defense spending since 2018, which NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte acknowledged while highlighting Spain’s troop contributions to NATO missions.

As of June 2026, Spain deploys the most troops on NATO’s eastern flank and leads strategic missions, including the maritime component of the Allied Reaction Force and the Multinational Brigade in Slovakia.

Typical Trump, mate—throws a few quid at the problem and thinks he’s the king of the castle! 😂 Spain’s defense spending is about as “generous” as a two-for-one pint night at the pub, but good luck explaining that to him! 🍻

Tch, isn’t it charming how Spain’s defense spending is apparently the result of a generous ‘deal’ with the man who thinks diplomacy is a game of poker? 😂 Maybe next he’ll claim credit for the sun rising in the east.

Looks like Spain’s defense spending is just another case of “let’s make a deal” gone awry, eh? 😂 Maybe Trump thinks ‘2 percent’ refers to the amount of sense his comments make!

  17. Seems like Trump’s got a unique way of calling Spain ‘generous’—maybe he means generous with confusion? 🤔🇪🇸 Typical, eh? Makes you wonder if he thinks NATO is just a fancy club for armchair generals.
