In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ new video, Elder Gerrit W. Gong from the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles discusses the importance of distinguishing God’s voice in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). The video, “Faith, Dignity and Human Flourishing: Hearing God’s Voice in an Age of Artificial Intelligence,” is available on YouTube.
Elder Gong poses the question, “Can artificial intelligence replace God?” He emphasizes that while AI and chatbots can be useful, they cannot replace personal relationships with Deity, community, nature, and self. He states, “Artificial intelligence can answer questions, but it cannot answer prayers. It can organize information, but it cannot offer revelation, covenant connection, or divine truth.”
Elder Gong encourages the wise use of AI to deepen relationships with God, self, others, and the environment. He advises against replacing trusted relationships with AI and promotes relying on the Spirit, practicing wisdom, and choosing trusted sources.
The video is now available in English on YouTube and will soon be accessible in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish in Gospel Library and Gospel Media. Shorter video segments will be shared on church social media channels and used as teaching resources in “Come, Follow Me.” The video includes episodes covering the relationship between AI and various aspects of life, including God, self, others, and the environment.
