Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a strategy for Ukraine to regain its territory, suggesting initial steps that involve diplomacy. “That’s what we need to do first, and then Ukraine can get back the other parts of its territory in a diplomatic way,” the leader stated.
Zelenskyy implied that such a framework could serve as the foundation for a possible cease-fire with Moscow. However, he emphasized that NATO membership should encompass the entire territory of Ukraine as defined by its internationally recognized borders.
“You can’t give an invitation to just one part of a country,” Zelenskyy argued. “Why? Because [if you did that] you would recognize that Ukraine is only that territory of Ukraine, and the other one is Russia.”
As the war approaches its third year, the conflict has intensified, with Moscow recently threatening to strike government buildings in Kyiv. Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have escalated, which Moscow claims are in retaliation for Ukraine’s use of advanced Western-supplied weapons, including U.S. and U.K.-provided missile systems, against Russian territory.
Zelenskyy acknowledged that his proposal is speculative, stating, “Ukraine has never considered such a proposal because no one has officially offered it to us.” NATO, for its part, has not yet responded to Zelenskyy’s comments.
Over the course of the conflict, many ideas for a resolution have been floated, Zelenskyy noted. However, he stressed that without a concrete mechanism to prevent future Russian aggression, cease-fires remain dangerously unstable. He argued that NATO membership is the only reliable guarantee of Ukraine’s long-term security.
