The coalition was poised to secure victory in Reggio Calabria and was leading in Arezzo, reinforcing the idea that conservative voters remain largely unified despite speculation that the referendum loss had weakened Meloni’s control.
The local elections were closely monitored as the first significant political test following the failed March justice referendum, with opposition parties aiming to showcase the vote as proof that collaboration between the Democratic Party, the Five Star Movement, and smaller left-wing factions could build national momentum. About a tenth of Italian citizens were eligible to vote across more than 700 municipalities.
Senator Raffaele Speranzon from Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party remarked in a post-election briefing that winning the first round in Venice would be “world class,” suggesting that the involvement of numerous national center-left party leaders had negatively impacted the opposition’s campaign.
