Brussels – During a meeting of cohesion ministers in Brussels on Thursday, prior to the inauguration of the new European Commission, key priorities for cohesion policies were discussed. Minister for Cohesion and Regional Development Aleksander Jevšek underscored the vital role that cohesion policy plays in fostering integrated, sustainable development and ensuring the EU’s overall success.
“The true strength of cohesion policy as a long-term investment strategy lies in upholding its foundational principles. It is crucial that we protect these principles while also enhancing and adapting the policy to maximize its impact on the development and resilience of the EU,” stated Jevšek.
Jevšek further emphasized that cohesion policy should support investments and reforms tailored to the unique characteristics and needs of regions and cities, aiming to bridge the development gaps among them. To enhance the effectiveness of these initiatives, he called for greater flexibility and simplification at all levels, urging that these considerations be incorporated into the preparation of legislative proposals for the upcoming programming period.
“Cohesion policy must feature straightforward and clear regulations, with a strong emphasis on achieving results,” the minister concluded, advocating for the preservation of the current scope of cohesion funds. (November 28)
