The European Environment Agency (EEA) and its European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet) have welcomed the Republic of Moldova as a cooperating country, expanding the EEA’s network to 32 member and 7 cooperating countries. The EEA is among the first EU agencies to incorporate Moldova into its regular functions and structures.
The EEA Management Board officially endorsed Moldova as a cooperating country. With this endorsement, Moldova joins as the seventh cooperating country of the EEA, alongside the Western Balkan countries Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Kosovo¹.
Moldova’s natural landscapes and ecosystems are part of larger European ecological systems, facing environmental challenges similar to those in the region. An oil spill, resulting from a Russian attack on a Ukrainian hydropower complex near the Moldovan border, is currently impacting the river basin, including Moldovan territory. Such events highlight that environmental and climate challenges transcend national borders.
Due to the oil spill, Moldova has declared an environmental alert, hindering the Moldovan delegation’s participation in the EEA Management Board meeting. However, the occasion was acknowledged through messages from Jessika Roswall, EU Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, Gheorghe Hajder, Moldovan Minister for the Environment, Leena Ylä-Mononen, EEA’s Executive Director, and André Weidenhaupt, EEA chair of the Management Board.
Moldova’s cooperation with the European Environment Agency is a significant step in its European integration. It is a step forward for both Moldova and the European Union, strengthening our commitment to a sustainable environment and bolstering our preparedness, security, and resilience.

The Republic of Moldova welcomes this new phase of collaboration with the European Environment Agency and its Eionet network. Joining this community enhances our ability to develop evidence-based environmental policies, improve data systems, and align with European standards. As Moldova reforms its environmental institutions, the expertise of the EEA and Eionet network will be crucial. Access to reliable environmental data will help us better understand challenges and design effective policies, supporting our efforts to modernize governance, improve data quality, and align with the EU environmental acquis in our integration path.

We are delighted to announce Moldova’s inclusion in the European Environment Agency as a cooperating country. Environmental issues know no borders, making cooperation essential. We have already collaborated constructively with Moldovan colleagues in ongoing projects. We look forward to expanding this partnership. Events like the oil spill on the Dniester River highlight shared challenges, including those caused by conflict, and the solutions we can develop together.
On behalf of the other 38 countries, I welcome Moldova as the 39th member of our Eionet family. Eionet connects expertise across Europe, facilitating data flow and knowledge exchange, helping us achieve our common goals for a sustainable Europe.
