Heydon did not dismiss the possibility of government support packages for farms and food producers but stated it is premature to discuss them.
The disruption is causing concern in Italy, where the largest farmers’ lobby, Coldiretti, warned on Tuesday that “the disruption of trade routes linked to the war involving Iran is already causing serious damage to exports.”
“The primary concern is the Middle East markets, where the total value of Italian agri-food exports exceeds €2 billion,” Coldiretti wrote in a press release, noting particular worries about perishable goods like fruits, vegetables, or flowers.
“The halt in maritime traffic in the Gulf coincides with the peak of the flower export season,” Coldiretti added.
In the meantime, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, ahead of upcoming elections, announced Monday that Hungary will extend fuel price caps “to protect Hungarian families, entrepreneurs, and farmers” in response to what he called an “international oil price explosion.”
