Mandelson Crisis Marks Starmer’s Most Perilous Moment

Left-wing former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, who was previously removed from the party due to comments on antisemitism, suggested on Sky News that Starmer might face a challenge before the upcoming local elections in the U.K. this May.

Some individuals are new advocates for immediate action. A fifth Labour MP, a moderate who joined parliament in 2024, also expressed that McSweeney should step down now, criticizing the leadership’s oversight that allowed Mandelson to be appointed as ambassador.

This situation has left some MPs feeling angry and discouraged. Sarah Owen passionately stated in Wednesday’s debate: “Don’t we need to put the victims at the heart of this, not just ourselves?”

However, they must wait for clarity on the case facts.

On Wednesday night, MPs agreed to release documents related to the diligence and vetting of Mandelson’s appointment, including his communication with McSweeney, ministers, civil servants, and special advisers during the six months leading up to his appointment.

Starmer aimed to prevent the release of documents that could compromise U.K. national security or international relations.
