Brussels – “The priority is clear: reduce illegal arrivals and maintain them at a low level,” stated European Commissioner Magnus Brunner, the key figure behind this migration shift.
In 2025, irregular entries into Europe dropped by over 25%, as reported by the European border guard agency Frontex. The decline is particularly notable on the Balkan route, with current entries concentrated in the Mediterranean, especially from Libya.
Europe’s political landscape has shifted to the right, prompting leaders to tighten immigration policies further.
The Commission’s migration strategy, which will guide its efforts for the next five years, emphasizes the deportation of rejected asylum seekers.
The European Parliament is currently reviewing a proposal from Brussels that would facilitate the establishment of “return hubs” outside the EU, where migrants with rejected asylum applications would be sent. It also aims to impose harsher penalties on migrants who refuse to leave European territory. (29 January 2026)
