The Five Toughest Jobs in Brussels

In an effort to counteract, Kallas attempted to assign Martin Selmayr, Juncker’s infamous former chief of staff, as a powerful deputy secretary general, but von der Leyen’s office obstructed this move.

A senior official mentioned that Kallas “privately complains that von der Leyen is a dictator, but there’s little or nothing she can do about that.” Kallas hails from small Estonia, and her liberal party is minor, making her position even less strong than Borrell’s, a socialist from Spain.

Kallas’ office did not respond to a request for comment.

Bálint Ódor, Hungarian ambassador

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán enjoys portraying the villain with his pro-Russia and pro-Trump stances, complicating the EU ambassador role. The current ambassador, Bálint Ódor, is perceived as aligned with Orbán’s Fidesz party, unlike his predecessor, Tibor Stelbaczky, who now works for the EU’s diplomatic division.

Hungarian diplomats risk arousing suspicion in Budapest over loyalty if they attempt to tone down harsh governmental rhetoric, according to a Hungarian diplomat. One official described the Hungarian ambassador as the “elephant in the room,” due to the nation’s close connection with the Kremlin.

During Hungary’s presidency of the Council of the EU last year, some diplomats voiced concerns over sharing information with the Hungarians because of Orbán’s ties to Russia (Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó frequently meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who is under EU sanctions). Ódor told POLITICO: “It’s a privilege to serve my country and represent Hungarian interests.”

Looks like Kallas is really wrestling with the big boys in Brussels—at this rate, she might as well bring a rubber duck to a shark tank! 🦈🥳 And as for Ódor, well, if being the “elephant in the room” was an Olympic sport, he’d be a gold medalist! 🐘💼

Seems like Kallas is playing a high-stakes game of chess in Brussels, but with all the pieces stacked against her—who knew being a minor player could feel so much like a tragedy? 😂

Seems like Kallas is really enjoying her time in the EU’s version of musical chairs, where the only thing getting seated is her patience. 🤷‍♂️ Meanwhile, Ódor’s just there making sure the Kremlin feels right at home – what a cozy little diplomatic soirée! 🍷

Seems like Kallas is stuck in a game of musical chairs while von der Leyen’s busy playing the dictator queen—who knew Brussels was the new Game of Thrones? 😂 And as for Ódor, well, nothing says “trustworthy diplomat” like being the Kremlin’s best mate, right? 🍷💼

Oh, the joys of navigating the Brussels circus! Kallas must feel like a tightrope walker without a net while juggling political grenades, all thanks to her “dictator” boss. 🍿

Running the EU is like herding cats, innit? One minute you’re trying to wrangle a deputy while dodging the dictator label, the next you’ve got an ambassador who moonlights as a Kremlin fan club president. 😂

  7. Oh, the drama of Brussels politics! It’s like watching a soap opera where the only thing thicker than the plot is the bureaucracy—who knew being a diplomat could be so riveting? 😂

Seems like Kallas is playing a thrilling game of chess with von der Leyen, but it’s more like checkers with these moves! 🤪 Next time, maybe she should just try rock-paper-scissors instead; it might be less complicated! 🥴

  9. Seems like Kallas is really enjoying her game of political chess in a match where everyone’s playing checkers. 🤷‍♂️ And who knew being a diplomat in Brussels came with a side of circus? 🎪

Gosh, who knew navigating the EU could be like a game of chess played by toddlers—everyone’s moving pieces around, but no one’s winning! 😂 I suppose when your biggest worry is a game of political musical chairs, the actual job just becomes a nice little side hustle, eh? 🍻

  11. So, we’ve got a little soap opera in Brussels, eh? Kallas is whining about von der Leyen being a dictator while trying to ride the coattails of her own little Estonia – now that’s rich! 😂

Looks like Kallas is playing a game of chess with von der Leyen as the queen who’s taken all the good pieces. 🧐 A proper Estonian power struggle, I must say – will we see a dramatic finale or just another dreary episode of “As the Brussels Turns”? 🍿

  13. Looks like Kallas really hit the jackpot with her minor party and a side of dictatorship; who needs a throne when you’ve got a front-row seat to the EU circus? 🤡🍿

Imagine being in a top job where your main task is to play musical chairs with dictators and elephants—what a dream gig! 🎩💼 Clearly, the EU is the place where loyalty is a game of roulette, and Hungary’s got the wheel spinning faster than a taxi in a traffic jam!

Just what we need, another round of political musical chairs. Kallas complaining about von der Leyen being a dictator is like a cat meowing about a dog barking—absolutely riveting! 🐱‍👤

Seems like Kallas is really enjoying the charm of a Brussels soap opera, where the plot thickens and the power struggles are as delightful as a cold cup of coffee. 🤷‍♂️ Who knew diplomacy could be so… riveting? 🍿

Seems like Kallas is having a right laugh trying to tango with a dictator, while Bálint’s just happy to be the Kremlin’s favorite pet. Classic EU soap opera material, innit? 😂
