Brussels – Slovenia supports the provisional enforcement of the trade agreement finalized on Saturday between the EU and the South American trade bloc Mercosur. Prime Minister Robert Golob stated on Thursday, upon arriving at the EU summit in Brussels, that Slovenia will align its stance with Germany, which also backs the temporary application of the agreement.
“Germany is our most significant trading partner, and we will adopt the positions we establish together. This likely includes the temporary implementation of the agreement,” Golob remarked.
Following the European Parliament’s request on Wednesday for the EU Court of Justice to weigh in on the trade agreement involving Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, thus delaying its ratification, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed support for provisional enforcement at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Earlier this month, despite concerns from Slovenian farmers, Slovenia voted in favor of signing the agreement with Mercosur during a session of the EU Council. On Thursday, the parliamentary agriculture committee urged the government to take measures to safeguard Slovenian agriculture and to implement stricter controls on the import of agricultural and food products from the four South American nations.
