Brussels – Ahead of Thursday’s EU leaders’ summit in Brussels, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob emphasized the urgent need for Europe to recognize its vulnerabilities in failing to establish a robust economic foundation and competitiveness. “We never know what tomorrow will bring,” he cautioned before the meeting, which would address the strained relations between the EU and the US, particularly concerning Greenland.
“This is where everything begins, and ultimately, it is up to us to determine our own destiny. We can also leave it to others, but I hope we won’t,” Golob remarked regarding the evolving dynamics between the EU and the US.
Golob linked the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting between US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos—where they outlined a framework for future agreements on Greenland and the Arctic region, followed by Trump’s withdrawal of tariff threats—to Europe’s firm response.
“However, we never know what tomorrow will bring. Thus, cautious optimism is warranted, alongside a clear understanding that we are living in uncertain times, and each step can become problematic if not carefully considered,” he stated.
In Golob’s view, the US remains a dependable partner for Europe, noting the importance of distinguishing between immediate events and the longstanding alliance that has proven its resilience over the decades. Despite recent developments, he believes relations have not yet reached a breaking point. (22 January)
