Five Years After the Devastating Earthquake in Albania: 59 Schools Reconstructed Through the “EU for Schools” Initiative

Five years ago, a devastating earthquake caused extensive damage to numerous schools in Albania.

As the fifth anniversary of this tragic event approaches, the European Union Delegation in Tirana has announced positive news: the reconstruction of 59 modern schools.

The EU4Schools initiative, funded by the European Union and executed by UNDP, is revitalizing Albania’s education system by constructing 59 state-of-the-art schools that meet EU standards in 11 municipalities hardest hit by the earthquake.

On February 17, 2020, the European Union hosted the International Donors’ Conference “Together for Albania” in Brussels, aimed at supporting the country’s recovery efforts following the disaster.

In this framework, the “EU for Schools” Program was launched with a budget of 75 million euros, funded by the EU and carried out in collaboration with the Albanian government. This project will benefit 25,000 students, teachers, and children. (November 27)
