Brussels – “I am profoundly troubled by the fire in Crans-Montana. My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those impacted,” stated Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission.
She noted that her teams are in touch with Switzerland, which has activated the EU civil protection mechanism.
This system allows any country worldwide to seek assistance from Brussels when faced with an emergency that exceeds their response capabilities.
“We are coordinating with Swiss authorities to provide medical support to the victims,” Ursula von der Leyen shared on the social media platform X. (2 January 2026)
