Berlin (dpa) – A recent survey by the opinion research institute Forsa for the magazine “Internationale Politik” reveals that over half of German citizens prioritize strengthening European cohesion as the most important foreign policy task for the federal government, with 54 percent expressing this view. This figure represents a decline of three percentage points from a similar survey conducted in February.
The survey indicates that support for Ukraine ranks lowest among priorities, cited by only seven percent of respondents, a significant drop from 17 percent in February.
Increasing Germany’s defense capability is the second most important priority, with 37 percent support, followed by limiting the influence of authoritarian states at 28 percent. Efforts for enhanced climate protection have fallen to fourth place, now at 23 percent, down from 26 percent. Strengthening ties with Global South countries, including India, Brazil, and various African nations, remains steady at 20 percent.
Notably, the survey found that West Germans place a significantly higher priority on increasing defense readiness and limiting authoritarian influence compared to East Germans. Conversely, only ten percent of individuals aged 14 to 29 consider enhancing defense capability as a key task, while younger respondents prioritize global climate protection much more than those over 30.
