The governor of Bulgaria’s central bank, Dimitar Radev, has joined the European Central Bank’s Governing Council. ECB President Christine Lagarde welcomed Bulgaria to the euro family and Governor Radev to the ECB Governing Council in Frankfurt in a statement on Thursday.
For about a month, payments in levs will continue, but change will be given in euros. Banks and post offices will exchange old currency without fees until June 30, while the Bulgarian Central Bank will do so indefinitely.
Public opinion remains divided. A Eurobarometer poll from March showed 53% of 1,017 Bulgarians surveyed opposed joining the eurozone, while 45% were in favor. A majority also believed Bulgaria wasn’t ready to adopt the euro, with concerns about “abusive price setting during the changeover.”
Bulgaria joined the EU on January 1, 2007. According to an EU survey from May, 58% of Bulgarians believe the country has benefited from EU membership.
