Madrid – Foreign Affairs Minister José Manuel Albares has asserted that Europe must enhance its sovereignty in response to criticism of the European Union found in the new U.S. security strategy, stating, “We Europeans are the ones who must defend the integrity of Europe.”
This statement was made in Congress, where Albares appeared at his own request to discuss Spain’s foreign policy. His appearance was also requested by EH Bildu, ERC, and BNG to clarify Spain’s position on the Sahara and the establishment of two migrant reception centers in Nigeria.
Albares emphasized the need for advancements in European sovereignty and expressed disappointment that neither the PP nor Vox addressed Europe or its security strategy in their remarks, nor mentioned the situations in Gaza or Ukraine. He highlighted Spain’s support for Palestine and the Ukrainian people during his initial comments.
Additionally, regarding the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who failed to arrive in Oslo for the ceremony, Albares stated he thinks the award is “fine” but criticized conservatives for attempting to import Venezuela’s divisions into Spain.
Albares referenced Machado after PP and Vox criticized him for not congratulating her. (December 10)
