Spain Advocates for a Targeted European Regulation to Safeguard Creators’ Copyrights from AI

Brussels – Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun asserted on Friday before European counterparts the necessity for “a new legislative instrument” designed to specifically protect the copyright of European creators in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), where language models often utilize protected works without obtaining consent or providing compensation.

“It is crucial to establish a new legislative tool to tackle copyright issues within the framework of AI regulations, as this remains unresolved, and the previously approved code of conduct does not address it,” the minister stated to the press upon his arrival at a meeting of EU Culture Ministers in Brussels.

The minister advocated for the government’s commitment to “a significant fight for the protection of creators’ rights” in the context of AI development, particularly regarding transparency, consent, and fair remuneration.

“This is a very important issue for us: the creation of a specific instrument to safeguard creators, alongside a licensing system for them within the AI field,” he said.

Urtasun noted that the Code of Good Practices “is insufficient,” warning that it has not only failed to address copyright risks and creator protection but has also “diluted” European AI regulations on this matter.

He called for a fortification of this regulatory framework to ensure limits on the “massive” use of protected content without adherence to copyright in training language models.

“We are in a position of vulnerability for our creators, who are witnessing their works being used for AI models without the three criteria that Spain promotes: transparency, fair remuneration when works are used, and author consent,” he emphasized. (November 28)

Oh sure, let’s add another shiny legislative tool to the already cluttered toolbox of EU regulations—because what’s better than a good ol’ bureaucratic quagmire, right? 😂 Time to protect our creators from AI while we sit back and watch the algorithms do the tango with their masterpieces—bravo, Ernest! 🍷

  2. Looks like Spain’s got a new hobby: drafting laws to protect creators from AI while the machines keep munching on our intellectual buffet without so much as a ‘thank you’. 🤷‍♂️ Good luck, Ernest, but I suppose we’ll need more than a legislative tool—maybe a magic wand might do the trick! 🪄

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed, another legislative tool to solve problems that could’ve been tackled with a simple chat over a pint. 🍻 Let’s just hope this ‘significant fight’ doesn’t turn out to be more like a gentle sparring match, eh?

Looks like Spain is planning to whip up a fancy new legislative soufflé to protect creators while AI gobbles up their work like it’s tapas at a fiesta. 🍽️ Good luck with that, mate; hope it rises better than last week’s paella! 😂

Looks like the EU’s cooking up yet another “revolutionary” regulation to protect creators from AI, because obviously, throwing more red tape at the problem has always worked wonders, right? 🤔💼

Seems like Spain’s Culture Minister has just discovered that AI can actually read, how charming! 😂 A whole new legislative tool just to tell machines not to swipe art, because apparently, a “Code of Good Practices” was just too darn easy, innit?

Looks like Spain’s finally decided that AI needs a bit of a leash—who knew it would take a whole legislative symphony to tell machines to ask nicely? 🤷‍♂️ But hey, at least someone’s fighting for the artists while the rest of us are still trying to figure out if we can copyright our morning coffee! ☕️💼

Nothing says “we care about creators” like a new layer of bureaucracy! 🤦‍♂️ Let’s just hope this legislative tool isn’t as effective as a chocolate teapot. 🍫🛠️

  9. Looks like Spain’s Culture Minister is ready to save the copyright world, one bureaucratic tool at a time. 🙄 Who needs innovation when you can just slap on some regulations, right? 🥳

Oh brilliant, just what we needed – another shiny regulation to babysit our creative geniuses while AI runs amok! 🤦‍♂️ Let’s hope this “new legislative instrument” can play the hero it claims to be, or we’ll just be throwing more spaghetti at the wall, won’t we? 🍝

Looks like Spain’s got a new hobby: crafting laws to babysit creators while AI throws a wild party with their hard work. 🥳 Can’t wait to see how effective that “new legislative instrument” is—might as well toss a coin! 💸

  13. Seems like our dear Minister Urtasun’s found a new hobby in creating legislation for AI—who knew protecting creators’ rights could be as complicated as assembling IKEA furniture? 🤔🇪🇸 Let’s hope the new “instrument” is more useful than a chocolate teapot! 🍫☕

Oh, brilliant! A new law to protect creators from AI swiping their work—because clearly the last 10 times didn’t quite hit the mark. 🙄 I guess “Code of Good Practices” couldn’t quite manage to wrap its head around common sense, eh?
