Brussels – Sweden is facing legal action from the EU for not meeting ammonia emission reduction targets.

The Commission stated in a press release on Friday that the actions taken by the authorities have not been adequate.

Additionally, Bulgaria and Portugal are also being summoned to court over ammonia emissions, while Latvia is similarly challenged for its nitrogen oxides and non-methane volatile organic compound (NMVOC) emissions.

This legal process follows a series of communications between the Commission and the respective countries that began in 2023. Initially, fourteen countries were required to respond, which was later narrowed down to nine, leading to the current action against the four specified countries.
