Brussels – The EU Commission has proposed enhancements to “military mobility” aimed at streamlining border crossings and simplifying the issuance of permits for military personnel and equipment during crises within the EU.
“The quicker we can deploy our forces, the more effective our deterrent capability becomes. We need to think in terms of days, not weeks,” stated Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas during a press conference on Wednesday.
The proposal suggests that obtaining a permit should take no more than three days, and this permit would be valid across all 27 member states. A dedicated framework will also be established for instances requiring the movement of “significantly more” military personnel, prioritizing them over other travelers and potentially relaxing standard traffic regulations.
Additionally, the Commission plans to invest in roads, railways, and other infrastructure to enhance military mobility.
