The inaugural glass recycling line has been launched in Albania, marking a major advancement in the sustainable management of around 42,000 tons of glass waste annually.
Located in Bubq, Krujë, “Albania Glass Recycling” is the country’s pioneering glass recycling enterprise, contributing to the transition towards a circular economy.
This recycling initiative was made possible with the support of the European Union via the EU4CELC program, alongside assistance from GIZ Albania and BMZ, RecycAl – Circular Economy Park.
Developed by local engineers, the line has the capacity to process up to 36,000 tons per year, establishing collaborations with manufacturers, distributors, and businesses in the HORECA sector to transform landfill glass into valuable resources.
The recycling process will produce two eco-friendly products: VetroPool, recycled glass sand for water filtration in swimming pools, and Terrazo glass, a decorative material for tiles, interior design, and urban furnishings.
The European Union delegation in Tirana highlights this project as a tangible demonstration of the circular economy and the EU-Albania partnership aimed at fostering a greener future.
During the presentation of this groundbreaking initiative, Albanian Minister of Environment, Sofjan Jaupaj, remarked on the collaboration between government, private sector, and international partners, calling it a clear example of effective teamwork.
“This company will yield tangible benefits for a greener economy by decreasing waste volume. This month, we have inaugurated several waste collection and recycling stations in various cities, where a significant portion of waste is recycled and reintegrated into the market, thereby lessening waste in the country and reducing landfill deposits,” Jaupaj stated.
Minister Jaupaj noted that the recent approval by the Assembly of the new law “On waste management” introduces a fresh approach and aligns with EU regulations, emphasizing collection and recycling.
Currently, recycling rates stand at 18%. With 870,000 tons of waste produced annually, the Albanian market represents a crucial opportunity for recyclers.
Albania has successfully opened 5 out of 6 negotiation chapters with the European Union, anticipating the opening of the remaining chapter within the year, with the environmental and food safety chapter being of paramount importance. (November 10)
