Paris – During a press conference on Thursday at the summit of heads of state ahead of COP30 in Belem, Brazil, the French president expressed a “rather positive” stance on the potential acceptance of a free trade agreement. In light of the backlash in France, he emphasized the need to remain “vigilant” and awaits “clear answers,” with further discussions scheduled for Friday in Mexico.
Later that day, French Minister of Agriculture Annie Genevard (from LR) stated that the assurances secured by France to safeguard its farmers and breeders are still inadequate.
“France’s red lines have been known from the start […] Today, while there have been some advancements, it is not enough,” she remarked in a message shared on X.
A significant portion of the political spectrum, from both the left and the right, reiterated their opposition to the agreement on Friday, calling for its rejection.
The influential agricultural union FNSEA labeled the president’s stance as “a total betrayal.”
Véronique Le Floc’h, president of Rural Coordination, declared, “Mercosur is the death of agriculture.” (November 7, 2025)
