Gunvor Withdraws Offer for Russia’s Lukoil After US Labels Firm as ‘Kremlin Puppet’

The sharp criticisms follow Lukoil’s announcement that it accepted an offer from a multinational trading house to acquire its international operations after Trump imposed sanctions on the energy giant. Lukoil stated that the U.S. Treasury’s approval is required before the company is officially blacklisted on November 21.

In Europe, Lukoil’s assets entail two refineries in Bulgaria and Romania, a 45 percent interest in a Dutch fuel processing facility, and roughly 2,000 gas stations.

Gunvor was established in 2000 by Swedish billionaire Torbjörn Törnqvist and Gennady Timchenko, a close ally of Putin, and was once the largest exporter of Russian oil worldwide.

In 2014, just days before the U.S. sanctioned Gunvor’s former co-owner after Russia’s Crimea annexation, Timchenko sold his 43.6 percent share in the trading entity.

Since that time, the trading house has moved away from Russia.

“Gunvor has always been open and transparent regarding its ownership and operations, actively distancing itself from Russian trading for over a decade, divesting Russian assets, and publicly denouncing the Ukraine war,” stated Pietras.

“We are eager to ensure this misunderstanding is corrected.”

Looks like Gunvor finally decided to take a summer holiday from Russian oil; maybe they thought they’d get a better tan without the Kremlin’s shadow hanging over them. 😏🌍

Oh, brilliant move, Gunvor! Nothing says “trust me” like running away from a Kremlin puppet show just in time for the final curtain call. 🕺💼

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “innocent bystander” quite like a company with a history of cozying up to the Kremlin now playing the victim. 🍷🙄

Looks like Gunvor’s pulling out faster than a dodgy taxi driver at a red light! 😂 I guess even billionaires know when to cut their losses and take a hint from Uncle Sam.

  5. Oh, splendid! Nothing like a good old game of corporate musical chairs while the Kremlin plays the fiddle. 🎻 Just what we needed, more puppets in the oil circus!

Isn’t it charming how Gunvor’s transparency is as clear as a foggy morning in London? 🤔 I suppose distancing oneself from the Kremlin is just another Tuesday in the oil biz! 🌫️💼

  7. Looks like Gunvor’s just playing a game of corporate musical chairs while the Kremlin conducts the symphony. 🎻 Who knew distancing oneself could be so… proximity-based? 🤷‍♂️

  8. Seems like Gunvor’s playing a game of musical chairs with Lukoil, but with the U.S. sanctions, it’s more of a game of “who can outrun the Kremlin puppet show” 🎭. Who knew being transparent could come with so many hidden strings? 😂

Can’t wait for the next episode of “As the Kremlin Turns,” starring Gunvor and Lukoil. Who knew dodging sanctions could be such a riveting plot twist? 😂💼

Looks like Gunvor’s playing a game of musical chairs, hoping to dodge the Kremlin label while the rest of us grab our popcorn. 🍿 If only distancing oneself from Russia was as easy as changing your socks! 😂

Looks like Gunvor’s decided that playing the Kremlin puppet wasn’t quite the career move they thought it would be. Who knew distancing oneself from Russia could be so… complicated? 😏

Looks like Gunvor’s trying to step out of the Kremlin’s shadow faster than a cat on a hot tin roof! Who knew distancing oneself from Russian oil could be a full-time job? 😂

So, Gunvor’s playing hide and seek with Lukoil now, eh? 🤔 Classic move, just like trying to sell ice to an Eskimo while insisting it’s actually a sauna. 😂

  15. Seems like Gunvor’s bid for Lukoil went up in smoke faster than a Bulgarian cigarette at a Eurocrat meeting. Who knew distancing from a ‘Kremlin puppet’ would be such a theatrical affair? 😂

Guess it’s tough to be a ‘Kremlin puppet’ when you can’t even find a decent marionette shop in Europe anymore. 🚫🤡

Looks like Gunvor’s playing a real-life game of musical chairs, but instead of music, it’s just the sound of sanctions ringing in their ears. 🎶🤷‍♂️ Who knew dodging Kremlin connections could be such a full-time job?
