
LUXEMBOURG – She describes the use of meat terminology for plant-based products as deceptive. “This creates the impression that it is a true substitute,” she noted. “These products are fundamentally different, so they should be labeled differently. Otherwise, it suggests an identity that is inaccurate.”
Previously, the cabinet expressed disappointment over the absence of EU definitions for ‘vegan’ and ‘vegetarian’ products in a letter to Parliament.
The topic briefly appeared in discussions among agriculture ministers. German Agriculture Minister Alois Raine opposes a ban, citing the additional regulations it would introduce. “Consumers understand that when they purchase a veggie schnitzel, it is not derived from meat.”
A ban would require approval from the European Commission and a majority vote from member states.
