After Colombia’s 2016 Peace Agreement, over 13,000 former FARC fighters disarmed within a year, relinquishing nearly 9,000 weapons, 38,000 tons of explosives, and millions of ammunition rounds.
Mr. Jenča remarked that despite difficulties, the agreement’s implementation has greatly enhanced security and trust within communities. About 11,000 former fighters are now part of development projects and related activities.
“They’re creating a peaceful and productive future — building homes, solving problems together, and progressing,” he told UN News.
He mentioned the Special Jurisdiction for Peace’s first convictions for conflict-related crimes as a “crucial milestone toward accountability,” according to UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk.
Support and Scrutiny
During a UN Security Council meeting, the United States questioned the Mission’s expanded role, calling it “excessive political priorities,” and promised to “carefully review” its future support.
Mr. Jenča said such evaluations are “normal,” but noted the other 14 Council members supported renewing the Mission’s mandate, with a vote pending this week.
The new Head of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia, Miroslav Jenča, observed some Peace Agreement project implementations.
The Mission has strong support from the Colombian government and political spectrum.
“I spoke with both opposition and government representatives — all backed the Mission’s continuation, although some suggested adjustments,” Mr. Jenča stated.
He recognized that sustaining operations will need more funding and hoped for stronger cooperation as Colombia joins the Security Council in 2026 as a non-permanent member.
A Global Example of Peacebuilding
Amid skepticism towards multilateralism, Mr. Jenča said Colombia’s peace process is “a shining example of negotiation and collaboration,” benefiting both the country and the world.
Looking toward Colombia’s next election period, Mr. Jenča reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to a safe and peaceful campaign.
“Our goal is understanding among political actors and ensuring peace, security, and respect for human rights,” he concluded.
