BRUSSELS – At the second Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, Angola’s President, João Lourenço, underscored the “development potential” of the Lobito Corridor for Southern Africa.
In his remarks, Lourenço referred to the “great project of the Lobito Corridor,” highlighting its capability to foster economic and social advancement not only in Angola but throughout the Southern African region.
This strategic logistical and economic initiative links the Lobito port on the Atlantic Ocean to the mining areas of southern Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, utilizing the Benguela Railway in Angola.
Lourenço described the Lobito Corridor as having “fundamental geopolitical and economic significance,” serving as a logistical platform that will streamline international maritime routes and enhance trade connections among Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. It is also expected to promote intra-African trade, bolster the African Continental Free Trade Area, and greatly aid Africa’s integration into global value chains.
At the forum, Lourenço met with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who stated on social media that the Lobito Corridor is “one of the most ambitious” projects under the Global Gateway initiative and represents “a pathway to growth and jobs.” Von der Leyen expressed her “pride in being a partner of Angola on this journey” and noted that the strategy will be discussed at the forthcoming EU-AU summit on November 24 and 25 in Luanda.
The EU-AU Summit is set for November 24-25, 2025, in Luanda, Angola.
The current Global Gateway Forum, taking place today and Friday, gathers senior officials from governments, financial institutions, the private sector, and civil society to explore innovative investment strategies.
Alongside the Angolan President, Prime Minister of Cape Verde, José Ulisses Correia e Silva, is also attending the event.
This year’s forum builds on the 2023 meeting that showcased the European Union’s external investment efforts, focusing on advancing global connectivity amidst geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges. (10/09/2025)
