Gaza: Aid Teams Renew Calls for Unrestricted Access to Affected Enclave

“There is little information available on the details or how the agreement will be implemented. However, we call for all crossings into Gaza to be open immediately so that humanitarian supplies can flow into the war-torn enclave,” said Juliette Touma, Director of Communications for the UN agency for Palestinians, UNRWA.

Her comments came as Israeli forces reportedly pulled back from parts of Gaza, in line with an agreement between Israel and Hamas, brokered in Egypt this week by US mediators and representatives from Qatar and Turkey.

Pushing back on famine

“This food from UNRWA is critical for averting and controlling famine,” Ms. Touma stressed, as the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) pointed to 50,000 “at risk” youngsters suffering from acute malnutrition.

“They need to be treated immediately…with the ceasefire, we hope we can get the therapeutic treatment that they so desperately need,” said spokesperson Ricardo Pires.

The UN’s top aid official, Tom Fletcher insisted on Thursday that “the whole UN humanitarian family” is mobilized to get aid into Gaza.

Speaking to journalists, he underlined the “indispensable role” of UNRWA in distributing aid supplies across the Strip while also highlighting the central role assigned to the UN in US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan now being enacted.

Active conflict ongoing

Aid teams still working in the enclave reported that the ceasefire had not come into effect early Friday morning.

Nonetheless, vital humanitarian work continues, including one UNICEF mission to Gaza City on Thursday “to rescue two babies who were in incubators and fighting for their lives,” said Mr. Pires.

“Luckily, with the hard work of colleagues and health workers on the ground, they survived and they got reunited with their families today.”

The UNICEF spokesperson explained that the mission had to wait 15 hours to gain access to Gaza City because “the situation on the ground was still very, very unstable and kinetic activity was taking place – a lot of violence.”

Echoing that assessment, UNRWA’s Ms. Touma noted that colleagues in the enclave reported ongoing airstrikes on Friday morning.

Thousands of people are on the move following a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

The UN agency spokesperson also noted that more than 370 UNRWA staff members have been killed over the course of the conflict sparked by Hamas-led terror attacks on southern Israel on 7 October 2023. “This is the highest death toll in the United Nations since it was first established,” she added.

Joining the call for “unimpeded” aid access across “all possible routes,” UN health agency (WHO) spokesperson Christian Lindmeier stressed the need to resume urgent medical evacuations from Gaza to the West Bank including East Jerusalem, along with flexible funding “to drive the recovery.”

UN agencies have 170,000 metric tons of food, medicine and other supplies ready to deliver into Gaza.

The aim is to scale up the provision of food across Gaza to reach 2.1 million people and some 500,000 people who need nutrition support.

  1. Looks like the UN’s new strategy is to play a game of “open the gates” while folks are dodging airstrikes. Who knew humanitarian aid had so many traffic jams? 🚦🙄

Seems like getting aid into Gaza is tougher than getting a reservation at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Paris during Fashion Week. But hey, who needs food and healthcare when we can have endless negotiations? 🍽️🙄

  3. Seems like the aid teams are asking for unrestricted access to Gaza like it’s a VIP club on a Friday night—good luck with that! 🍻

Seems like getting aid into Gaza is as easy as herding cats in a rainstorm. Who knew that “unrestricted access” involved so many red tape ribbons? 🎀

Just what we needed, another round of “please let us help”—because asking politely has always worked so well in a conflict zone, right? 🤷‍♂️ It’s like trying to sell ice to penguins in Antarctica! 🐧

  6. Isn’t it just charming how the world spins on its axis while aid teams play a game of “who can shout the loudest for access”? One might almost forget there’s a humanitarian crisis brewing in the background. 🙄

Unrestricted access to Gaza, eh? Sounds like the perfect time for a game of ‘who’s got the biggest NGO’ while the actual needs are as clear as mud. 🧐

  8. Isn’t it just delightful how we can send aid to Gaza while simultaneously negotiating ceasefires like they’re some sort of dinner date? 🍽️ “Let’s not disturb the violence, but do pass the hummus, shall we?”

Looks like the aid teams are having a lovely game of “let’s see who can get into Gaza first” while the rest of us sit back and enjoy the show. 🍿 As if the situation isn’t already complicated enough, eh? 🤷‍♂️

Just what we needed, another call for “unrestricted access” to Gaza. Because, you know, having a ceasefire and aid rolling in like a well-oiled Eurotour bus is all it takes to fix decades of chaos. 🤷‍♂️🍻

Seems like the UN is on a real treasure hunt for “unrestricted access” in Gaza—who knew that humanitarian aid was such a hot commodity? 🤷‍♂️ Let’s just hope the locals don’t have to wait for the next peace agreement to get their lunch sorted! 🍽️

Typical, isn’t it? A humanitarian crisis and all they can manage is asking nicely for a VIP pass to the buffet. 🥴

Seems like the UN is really on top of things, calling for “unrestricted access” while dodging bullets and waiting for a ceasefire. It’s almost like they think a “please” will magically open the floodgates for humanitarian aid! 🙄

Looks like everyone’s suddenly a humanitarian expert now, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Can we just open the gates and let the aid flood in, or are we waiting for a royal invitation first? 🍷

Seems like the UN’s got a real knack for timing, eh? Meanwhile, while they’re busy planning their next big humanitarian holiday, folks in Gaza are just hoping for a snack and a safe place to sit. 🍕😏

Seems like opening the floodgates for aid in Gaza is as simple as asking nicely—who knew humanitarian access was just a polite request away? 🤷‍♂️

  17. Looks like the UN is once again trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat while juggling flaming swords. Can’t wait to see how swiftly those humanitarian supplies travel through the “open” crossings—should be a real laugh! 😏

  18. Just what we needed, another reminder that bureaucracy moves slower than a snail on a Sunday stroll. 🤦‍♂️ “Unrestricted access”? Sure, and while we’re at it, let’s open the floodgates for a little sunbathing in the middle of a monsoon! 🍃

Oh great, another call for “unrestricted access” – because clearly, the last dozen times were just practice runs, right? 🤦‍♂️ Let’s just hope it’s not a case of “everyone’s invited” but no one actually shows up. 🥳
