Von der Leyen to Address Espionage Allegations with Hungarian Commissioner

Brussels – The President of the Commission and the Hungarian Commissioner will engage in discussions regarding espionage allegations against Budapest “as soon as possible,” stated Paula Pinho, the spokesperson for the European executive, at a press conference on Friday.

An investigation by various European media outlets indicates that Hungary, under Viktor Orban, attempted to pressure its citizens employed in European institutions to carry out espionage activities from 2012 to 2018.

These accusations have been dismissed by Budapest, labeling them as a “smear campaign.”

Particular attention is being directed towards Oliver Varhelyi, who was in charge of the Hungarian delegation in Brussels during the reported timeframe.

The European executive revealed on Thursday that it would establish an “internal group” to “examine” these claims.

Meanwhile, the NGO Transparency International has urged the European Parliament to initiate its own investigation. (October 10, 2025)
