European Commission Advocates for Prohibition of Conversion Therapies

Lahbib stated during the launch of the European LGBTQI+ strategy for 2026-2030, “Conversion practices are not therapies. They are harmful, can lead to physical and mental health issues, and fundamentally discredit the dignity of those affected.”

Statistics reveal that one in four LGBTQI+ individuals, and nearly half of transgender men and women, have encountered such practices, which may involve physical or sexual violence, verbal insults, or humiliation. “This must come to an end,” emphasized the Belgian Commissioner.

“Conversion therapy” encompasses a variety of methods aimed at altering an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Certain EU member states still necessitate surgical or medical treatments for legal gender recognition.

Experts from the United Nations equate these practices to torture and advocate for their prohibition. The Netherlands is set to become the ninth nation to outlaw these practices, following Belgium’s lead. Meanwhile, a recent citizen initiative seeking a European-wide ban has amassed over 1.2 million signatures.

“We will collaborate with member states, respecting their individual jurisdictions, to eliminate these harmful practices,” Lahbib stated. “However, we currently lack a comprehensive understanding of what these practices entail. We need to collect data and information to determine the most effective approach to address this matter.”

Oh, brilliant! Who knew we needed a PhD to figure out that torturing people is a bad idea? 🙄 Let’s just hope they don’t take too long collecting data—after all, the clock is ticking on common sense! 🕰️

  2. Isn’t it just delightful when the EU finally decides to tackle a pressing issue like conversion therapy? Bravo! 👏 It’s almost as if they think dignity matters more than bureaucratic red tape—what a radical notion! 😂

Oh, fantastic! Just what we need—another EU initiative to tell us how to live our lives. Maybe next they’ll put a ban on bad fashion sense while they’re at it! 😏

Oh, marvelous! Just what we needed—more meetings to “gather info” while half the continent is still stuck in the dark ages. 🤦‍♂️ At this rate, we’ll get a ban on conversion therapy right after they figure out how to fix the weather in the UK! 🌧️

  5. So, we’re finally getting serious about banning “conversion therapy”? Bravo, I suppose, but I can’t help but wonder how many more meetings it will take to figure out what that actually means. 🥳

Looks like the EU is finally getting around to tackling “conversion therapy,” or as I like to call it, the “let’s ignore basic human rights” club. 🤦‍♂️ Who knew it would take so long for them to figure out that torture shouldn’t be a part of therapy?

Seems like the EU has finally decided to take a break from their usual debates about bananas and cucumbers to tackle something actually important—who knew? 😏 But hey, at least we’re not needing a PhD to figure out that conversion therapy isn’t exactly a spa day! 🏳️‍🌈

  8. Looks like the EU’s finally cracking down on those “therapies” that are about as helpful as a chocolate teapot. Time to swap the conversion nonsense for some good ol’ dignity, eh? 🍫☕

  9. Seems like the European Commission has finally decided that torturing people isn’t the best marketing strategy for their human rights agenda. Bravo! 🙄

Typical, innit? While we’re busy debating how to stop the “conversion” nonsense, we could be focusing on real issues like the price of pints in the pub. 🍻 Time to get our priorities straight, lads!
