Demolition of Kortrijk Sion District Begins, Led by Goedkope Woning

Kortrijk (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Demolition has started in Kortrijk’s Sion district. Phase 1 removes 74 homes and builds 91 new units by 2028. Phase 2 in 2029 replaces 28 homes with 42 units under Goedkope Woning.

As VRT News reported, demolition work has started in the Sion district of Kortrijk. Officials say the demolition is needed to improve safety. The social housing association is overseeing the project and plans to replace old buildings with modern homes that meet current standards.

What changes are coming to Kortrijk’s Sion district by 2029

The project is being carried out in 2 phases. Phase 1 is already underway, with 74 outdated homes being torn down. Construction of 91 new homes will begin in the spring and is expected to take about 3 years. Once this phase is finished, residents in Phase 2 will be able to move into the new homes.

Phase 2 will begin after the first stage is complete. In 2029, the remaining 28 old homes will be demolished, and 42 new homes will be built in their place. The redevelopment will include a variety of housing types.

Officials mentioned that smaller families and singles can choose 1-, 2-, or 3-bedroom units. Larger families will have access to 4- and 5-bedroom homes. Officials say the plan is designed to create a safer, more inclusive, and modern neighbourhood.

The Sion neighbourhood of Kortrijk was created in the 1970s as a project of social housing to meet the higher demand for affordable housing in the city. As time passed, many buildings were rendered outdated and/or empty, which resulted in more significant problems related to squatting and vandalism. In 2008, the social housing company Goedkope Woning developed a program to begin upgrading its older homes, and to do so sustainably and efficiently for better living.

  1. Looks like Kortrijk’s Sion district is getting a glow-up, or should I say a demolition party? 🎉 Can’t wait to see all those “modern homes” that are definitely not just squares in a row – what a novel idea! 🏠💁‍♂️

Looks like Kortrijk’s Sion district is getting a facelift – or should I say a bulldozer makeover? 🤔 Can’t wait to see if all those new “modern” homes come with a side of charm, or just more concrete and fewer dreams! 🏗️💤

Demolishing 74 homes in Kortrijk? Brilliant strategy! Nothing says “modern living” quite like a good old-fashioned wrecking ball to kickstart the neighborhood revival. 🏗️💥

Oh, smashing! Nothing like tearing down a few homes to build some “moderns,” eh? Guess safety means fewer walls and more fresh air. 😏🏗️

Demolishing 74 homes to build 91 new ones, eh? Sounds like a classic case of “out with the old, in with the overpriced” – just what we need in Kortrijk! 🏗️💸

Looks like they’re finally turning that dystopian setting into something resembling a neighborhood—about time we got rid of those “charming” 70s relics. 🏚️➡️🏡 Just what we need, more cookie-cutter boxes to keep up with the European dream, eh? 😏

Demolishing the Sion district, eh? Just what we need – a symphony of wrecking balls instead of a decent cup of coffee! 😏🏗️

Talk about a game of musical chairs with houses! At this rate, the only thing “modern” about Sion will be the dust on the new flats when they finally finish building them by 2029. 🏗️😂

  9. Looks like Kortrijk’s Sion district is getting a trendy makeover—because who wouldn’t want to trade their old digs for a shiny new box, eh? 🏚️➡️🏠 More units, more fun, and fewer memories of the good old days… Cheers to progress! 🍻

Looks like Kortrijk’s got more than just a demolition crew—it’s a full-on renovation party! 🎉 Hope the new homes come with a complimentary espresso machine, because after all this, they’ll need a good pick-me-up! ☕️

Well, nothing says “progress” like knocking down a few old houses to build… well, a few more houses! Let’s just hope the new digs come with a side of charm, eh? 😏🏗️

Demolishing the Sion district, eh? Guess it’s easier to knock down 74 homes than actually fix the ones that are still standing. Bravo, Goedkope Woning, always on the cutting edge of making a mess look like progress! 🏗️🙄
