Brussels – Sweden, along with several other EU nations, is expressing concern over the increasing population of the great cormorant, particularly regarding its impact on local fish stocks. However, the EU Commission appears reluctant to modify the bird’s protection status.
“I acknowledge your suggestion to categorize the great cormorant as a huntable species within the EU. While we can explore this option, I would like to discuss with you whether it would indeed alleviate the administrative burden,” stated the EU’s Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall during a meeting with agricultural and fisheries ministers from member states in Brussels this week.
Commissioner Roswall emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue with stakeholders and indicated plans to provide updated guidelines that would allow member states to make exceptions to the cormorant’s protection status in order to manage its population effectively.
