Pope Leo XIV Encourages Youth to Harness AI for Good

Pope Leo XIV encouraged social media users to harness artificial intelligence for positive purposes, contrasting with the more cautious approach of his predecessor, Francis. During Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, the first American pope was warmly welcomed, taking selfies with attendees amidst a flurry of phone cameras. He addressed the crowd in English, Spanish, and Italian, advising them to avoid fake news and online dating, focusing instead on being “agents of communion.” Pope Leo emphasized the importance of creating heartfelt connections and a language reflecting love. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle highlighted that everyone holds influence in God’s eyes. This gathering is part of a youth jubilee, leading up to a large-scale vigil and Mass in Rome. Pope Leo’s tone differed from Francis’s, who had warned of artificial intelligence’s potential dangers earlier. Yet, Leo also cautioned against using creativity to harm others’ dignity. The pope concluded with a plea for peace amid global conflicts.
