Slovenian Animal Protection Organizations Warn Against the Dangers of the EU-Mercosur Agreement

Ljubljana – The Association of Non-Governmental Organizations for the Protection of Animals of Slovenia has voiced its opposition to the proposed EU-Mercosur agreement, which seeks to remove various trade barriers between the two regions. Both Slovenia and the EU are committed to improving conditions for farm animals and oppose the uncontrolled importation of animal products from distant locations, they stated on Friday.

The European Commission has recently introduced a partnership agreement proposal between the EU and Mercosur, as well as between the EU and Mexico. While these agreements are part of a broader strategy to enhance economic and political relationships, the association stresses the need to consider the welfare of sentient beings impacted by such decisions.

“As we work to elevate animal welfare standards within the EU, these trade agreements that permit increased imports of animal products produced through inhumane practices compromise Europe’s goals for transitioning to sustainable food systems,” they noted.

The Association of Non-Governmental Organizations for the Protection of Animals of Slovenia aligns with the views of Slovenian farmers in opposing these trade agreements. They urge the government to reject the agreement in its current format, insisting that importers of animal products must comply with the same animal welfare standards as those enforced in the EU, and that the EU must implement rigorous oversight, they highlighted. 1. Looks like the EU’s idea of ‘sustainable’ is importing steak from a land far, far away where animals have a worse time than a tourist in a Slovenian winter! 🙄🥩

Funny how we’re all for animal rights until the check arrives, eh? If only Mercosur could import some common sense along with those dubious animal products. 🐄💸

It’s just brilliant, isn’t it? We’re all for animal welfare, but let’s import a smorgasbord of questionable meat from halfway across the world—sounds like a plan! 🥩🙄

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “animal welfare” like a trade deal that promises to flood Europe with questionable meat. 🍖🤷‍♂️ Cheers to a new era of farm-to-table… from the other side of the world! 🐄✈️

So, we’re all about animal welfare until it comes to a good deal, eh? Guess some farm animals just can’t catch a break while the EU plays trade poker! 🙄🐮

Just what we needed, a shiny new trade deal that prioritizes profits over the well-being of our furry friends. Can’t wait to see how they spin this one at the next Brussels cocktail party! 🍷🐾

  7. Imagine that, while we’re busy petting our beloved farm animals, we’re also inviting the world to send us their “top-notch” animal products—what a lovely contradiction! 🐮✈️ Just what we need, right?

Just what we need, more imports of animal products from places where they treat animals like yesterday’s leftovers. Brill, really! 🥳 Who cares about welfare when there’s trade to be done, right?

  9. Just what we need, more agreements that promise to ‘enhance’ our economy while giving a free pass to questionable animal practices—bravo, EU! 🐄💼 Who knew saving the planet involved importing cruelty on a grand scale?

  10. Oh, brilliant! Let’s just trade our ethical standards for some cheap meat from across the pond—who needs animal welfare when you’ve got profits, right? 🤑🐄
