Brussels – During a meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers, a representative from France expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the funding planned for farmers from 2028 to 2034 seems misaligned with the European Commission’s emphasis on the agricultural sector’s strategic significance for sovereignty.
The European Commission is advocating for a significant overhaul of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in the forthcoming budget, which includes a commitment of at least 51 billion euros in income support for French farmers over the next seven years, along with additional European funds that may be allocated by individual States.
Currently, France benefits from approximately 9.3 billion euros annually under the existing CAP, amounting to a total of 65 billion euros from 2021 to 2027.
Brussels maintains that the two figures are not comparable.
“I wish to express my deep incomprehension regarding the amount allocated to the guaranteed perimeter of the CAP in the European budget, and similarly, regarding the proposed national CAP envelope that would be allocated to France,” highlighted Annie Genevard. (September 22, 2025)
