Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, has stood by the extensive sanctions her institution proposed on Israel this week in relation to its military efforts in the Gaza Strip.
In a written interview with the Leading European Newspaper Alliance, von der Leyen noted that she understood the horrific attacks orchestrated by Hamas in October 2023 had fundamentally shaken Israel.
“But the latest developments are particularly worrying, with a man-made famine and the financial drying up of the Palestinian Authority,”
She said in the comments released on Sunday.
Why does Von der Leyen stress on two-state solution?
Von der Leyen emphasised that the two-state solution, which includes a Palestinian state existing peacefully and in good neighbourly relations alongside Israel, is the only option for sustainable, long-lasting peace in the region.
“What we have seen from the Israeli government in recent months is a clear attempt to undermine the two-state solution.”
That is why the commission decided to act and proposed a package of “targeted and proportionate measures to find a way forward,” von der Leyen said.
Why is the EU considering sanctions against Israel?
The European Commission put forth a number of punitive actions to encourage the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to change its course in the conflict. In her annual State of the Union speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, von der Leyen decried the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” indicating plans to reduce support for Israel and introduce some sanctions.
The proposed “package of measures” includes sanctions on “extremist Israeli ministers” and settlers, a suspension of bilateral support for Israel, and a suspension of the EU’s association agreement with Israel, which gives it preferential access to European markets.
“Europe needs to do more,”
Said von der Leyen, adding that while she would attempt to move the bloc in unison, EU member states also needed to take “our own responsibility” on the issue.
“Europe’s goal has always been the same. Real security for Israel and a safe, present future for all Palestinians,”
She said.
How has Israel reacted to the EU’s proposed sanctions?
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar was quick to criticise the EU chief and asserted that she was offering backing to Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas.

Looks like Ursula’s got a new hobby—playing sanctions bingo with Israel. 🎉 Who knew diplomacy could be this entertaining? 😂
Typical EU move, isn’t it? While the world’s on fire, we’re busy perfecting the art of sanctions—like handing out umbrellas in a monsoon! ☂️💼
Oh joy, more sanctions – just what we need to spice up international relations! Guess the EU’s new motto is “let’s solve problems with a side of bureaucracy and a dash of diplomacy.” 😏
Looks like Ursula’s found a new hobby—playing sanctions bingo! 🎉 Just what we need, more “targeted measures” to keep the peace in the Middle East. Brilliant strategy, really! 😏
Seems Ursula’s got a flair for drama, doesn’t she? Maybe next she’ll propose a pastry to sweeten the deal—who knew diplomacy could be so… *bakery-like*? 🍰
Looks like Ursula is handing out sanctions like they’re free samples at a market—just what everyone needed during a crisis, right? 🥳 At this rate, we’ll need a degree in diplomacy just to navigate our grocery lists! 🍞🍷
Seems like Ursula’s got the memo that sanctions are the new black in Brussels. Who knew diplomacy could be such a trendy affair? 🙄💼
Looks like Ursula is really going for the gold in her EU-sanctioning Olympics! Who knew playing international chess could be so… entertaining? 🎭💼
Looks like Ursula’s really got her hands full trying to balance the scales in the Middle East – maybe she should stick to organizing the next Eurovision instead? 🎤🇪🇺
Struggling to keep up with the EU’s latest attempts at diplomacy? Sounds like someone’s been reading too many fairy tales about two-state solutions while munching on a croissant. 🥐✨
Oh sure, because nothing says “peace” quite like slapping sanctions on your mates while trying to negotiate over tea and crumpets. Just what we need – more bureaucracy with a side of moral high ground! 🙄✨
Looks like Ursula’s got a new hobby—playing sanctions bingo while the rest of us just try to find a decent cup of coffee. 🍵 Who knew politics could be so *spicy*?
Seems like Ursula’s given us the classic “let’s all hold hands and sing Kumbaya” approach while handing out sanctions like they’re party favors. Can’t wait to see how that works out! 😂
Looks like Ursula’s really found the magic wand for Middle Eastern peace – just sprinkle some sanctions and voilà! Who needs diplomacy when you’ve got bureaucratic charm? 🤷♂️
Brilliant strategy, Ursula! Because nothing says “let’s resolve a conflict” quite like slapping sanctions on one side while keeping the other cozy, eh? 😂
