Ship Owner Responsible for Beirut Port Explosion Arrested in Bulgaria

Bulgarian authorities have detained a Russian national, the owner of the cargo ship linked to the Beirut port explosion in 2020, as reported by Bulgarian National Radio through security service sources.

The individual has been identified as Igor Grechushkin. He was apprehended on September 6 at Sofia’s Vasil Levski Airport upon arrival from Cyprus.

He remains in pre-trial detention.

Grechushkin is wanted by Interpol, a discovery made during document checks by Bulgarian border authorities.

The August 4, 2020 explosion in the Beirut port claimed over 200 lives and injured more than 6,000, causing widespread destruction and damage amounting to billions of euros. The Jordanian Seismological Observatory noted the explosion’s force was akin to a 4.5 magnitude earthquake, as reported by RIA Novosti.
